Zōng Zé 宗澤 (1059–1128), zì Rǔlín 汝霖, of Wúzhōu 婺州 Yìwū 義烏 (Zhèjiāng). Jìnshì of Yuányòu 6 / 1091. Held office through provincial zhōuxiàn posts. Jìngkāng 1 (1126): as Zhī Cízhōu, decided to remain when Gāozōng (then Kāngwáng) retreated; thereby anchored the early-Gāozōng court’s connection to the eastern-frontier resistance. Jiànyán 1 (1127): made Zhī Kāifēngfǔ (Prefect of the fallen capital) — the cardinal post of the resistance program. Repeatedly memorialised Gāozōng to return to Biànjīng (Kāifēng) and resume the offensive against Jin; per Sòng shǐ, more than 24 such memorials in his last years. The court, dominated by the héyì (peace-faction) under Huáng Qiánshàn 黃潛善 and Wāng Bóyàn 汪伯彥, did not respond. Zōng died (1128) of an abscess on his back, his last words crying “guò Hé 過河!” (“cross the [Yellow] River!”). Posthumously canonised Zhōngjiǎn 忠簡 (Loyal-and-Simple). Author of Zōng Zhōngjiǎn jí 宗忠簡集 KR4d0135 in 8 juǎn; original compilation by Lóu Fǎng 樓昉 樓昉 in 1221 (Jiādìng xīnsì); re-edited by Wáng Tíngzēng 王庭曾 王庭曾 in early Qīng. Biography: Sòng shǐ j. 360. Lifedates 1059–1128 confirmed.
