Zhāng Dàolíng 張道陵 (c. 34–156) — originally Zhāng Líng 張陵 — was the founder of the Tiān shī dào 天師道 (Way of the Celestial Masters), the first major organized Daoist movement. Traditional hagiographies recount his revelation from Tài shàng Lǎo jūn 太上老君 in 142 CE on Hè míng shān 鶴鳴山 (Sìchuān), after which he organized a community governed by the “twenty-four dioceses” (èr shí sì zhì 二十四治) and the “rice levy” (wǔ dǒu mǐ 五斗米), transmitting the lineage to his son Zhāng Héng 張衡 and grandson Zhāng Lǔ 張魯. Many alchemical and ritual scriptures are attributed to Zhāng Dàolíng pseudepigraphically; he figures as nominal author of KR5c0278 Tài qīng jīn yè shén dān jīng and numerous other canonical texts.
