慧暉 (唐, Abhidharma scholar)

Huìhuī 慧暉 (DILA A001732; fl. mid-to-late 8th century CE) was a Tang dynasty Abhidharma monk and student of 圓暉 (圓暉). He lived at Xīmíngsì 西明寺 in Chang’an and composed the 俱舍論頌疏義鈔 (KR6l0040, X53n839, 3 juan), a sub-commentary on 圓暉’s Sòng Shū. His biographical details are otherwise unrecorded.

慧暉 (宋, Chán master)

Huìhuī 慧暉 (alternate names: 自得慧暉, Zìdé Huìhuī; also styled 淨慈慧暉; DILA A012808; 1097–1183)

Southern-Sòng Cáodòng 曹洞 Chán master, Zìdé 自得. 1097 – 22 December 1183 (lunar 淳熙 10.11.29), shìshòu 87, sēnglà 75. Dharma-heir of Hóngzhì Zhèngjué 宏智正覺 (1091–1157); thus dharma-grandson of 子淳 Dānxiá Zǐchún and dharma-cousin of 清了 Zhēnxiē Qīngliǎo. Native of Shàngyú 上虞 (Huìjī 會稽), lay surname Zhāng 張 (though the tǎmíng in juan 6 of his own yǔlù gives a divergent reading: Jīnzhōu Ānchéng 金州安城, lay surname Wáng 王 — an unresolved textual crux).

Tonsured in childhood by Chéngzhào Dàoníng 澄照道凝; ordained at twelve-thirteen and took full precepts. At twenty went to Chánglú 長蘆 to consult Zhēnxiē Qīngliǎo and attained an initial opening; on return to his home region met Hóngzhì, who after testing him declared him “a true son in the chamber” 室中真子 and conferred dharma-transmission.

Abbacies in sequence: Bǔtuó 補陀 (from Shàoxīng 7 / Dīngsì / 1137), Wànshòu 萬壽, Jíxiáng 吉祥, Xuědòu 雪竇. In Chúnxī 3 (1176) summoned by imperial edict to preside at Lín’ān Jìngcísì 淨慈寺 — the premier court-patronised Chán seat of Southern-Sòng Hángzhōu — whence his abbatial style Jìngcí Huìhuī. Retired in the autumn of Chúnxī 7 (1180) back to Xuědòu 雪竇 where he died three years later.

(A040105). Principal work: his own six-juan yǔlù (KR6q0360), edited by his dharma-brother 了廣 Zǎnxī Liǎoguǎng with xiàyǔ 下語 commentary by another dharma-brother 明總 Shíshuāng Míngzǒng — an unusually cooperative editorial arrangement reflecting the doctrinal solidarity of the Hóngzhì / Cáodòng circle.
