Jùshě Lùn Sòng Shū Yì Chāo 俱舍論頌疏義鈔

Doctrinal Extracts from the Commentary on the Abhidharmakośa Verses by 慧暉 (述)

About the work

The Jùshě Lùn Sòng Shū Yì Chāo 俱舍論頌疏義鈔 (CBETA X53n839) is a Tang dynasty 3-juan sub-commentary (chāo 鈔) on 圓暉’s Jùshě lùn sòng shū (KR6l0036, T1823), composed by the monk Huìhuī 慧暉 (慧暉, Tang), a student of 圓暉. The title yì chāo 義鈔 indicates “doctrinal extracts” — selected passages from 圓暉’s text with additional explanation. The CBETA edition preserves the text in 3 juan with a table of contents.

Prefaces

No independent preface in the surviving text. The opening consists of a table of contents listing the three fascicles by their chapter coverage.

Abstract

Huìhuī 慧暉 (fl. mid-to-late 8th century CE), styled Tang Abhidharma monk, was a student of 圓暉 (圓暉) who lived at Xīmíngsì 西明寺 in Chang’an. He composed this sub-commentary (yì chāo) as doctrinal annotations on 圓暉’s commentary, focusing on clarifying the most difficult passages. Like his fellow student 遁麟’s Jùshě lùn sòng shū jì (KR6l0041), this text belongs to the second-generation transmission of 圓暉’s Sòng Shū commentary tradition.

This Tang Abhidharma master Huìhuī is entirely distinct from the Southern-Sòng Cáodòng Chán master of the same name 慧暉 (1097–1183) represented in the existing yǔlù tradition.
