Huìlì 慧立 (b. 615; death-date not securely preserved, sometime after 675) was a Táng-period Buddhist monk and a disciple of 玄奘 (Xuánzàng) at Dà Cí’ēnsì 大慈恩寺 in Cháng’ān. He participated in Xuánzàng’s translation bureau and was among the inner circle of disciples who attended Xuánzàng in his final years at Yùhuágōng 玉華宮. After Xuánzàng’s death in 664 he composed the original draft (the běn 本) of what became the standard biography, the Dà Táng Dà Cí’ēnsì sānzàng fǎshī zhuàn (KR6r0043), in five juan. His version was concealed during his lifetime and only retrieved and supplemented after his death by 彥悰 (Yàncóng of Cí’ēnsì), who completed and presented the ten-juan version in 688.
慧立 also features as a participant in Xuánzàng’s later translation projects in his own right, but his name has been preserved in subsequent Buddhist historiography chiefly through his authorship of the great Xuánzàng biography.
