Míng Chéng zǔ 明成祖 (1360–1424) — personal name Zhū Dì 朱棣, reign-era Yǒng lè 永樂 (1403–1424), posthumous temple-name Chéng zǔ 成祖 — was the fourth son of the Hóng wǔ founding emperor and seized the Míng throne from his nephew the Jiàn wén 建文 emperor in the bloody Jìng nán 靖難 civil war (1399–1402). As a usurper he relied on elaborate religious and historiographical programs of legitimation, including massive patronage of the Zhēn wǔ 真武 / Xuán tiān shàng dì 玄天上帝 cult at Wǔ dāng shān 武當山 and construction of the Wǔ dāng Daoist complex. KR5c0360 Yù zhì Zhēn wǔ miào bēi 御制真武廟碑 (1415) is his personally commissioned stele-inscription for a Zhēn wǔ temple.
