Huìshān Jièxiǎn 晦山戒顯 (1610–1672), late-Míng / early-Qīng Línjì 臨濟 Yángqí-branch 楊岐派 Chán master. Zì Yuànyún 愿雲 (“Vow-Cloud”), hào Huìshān 晦山 (“Dark-Mountain”) and Bàwēng 罷翁 (“Resting Old Man”). Native of Tàicāng zhōu 太倉州 (modern Jiāngsū).
Held the abbacy at Yúnjū 雲居 (whence the alternate Yúnjū Xiǎn 雲居顯) as his principal institutional seat. Survived the Ming-Qing transition (1644) and continued his teaching career into the early Qing. Died Kāngxī 11 (1672) or 12 (early 1673), aged 63. Buried at the Fórì sì 佛日寺.
Principal surviving work is the Chán mén duànliàn shuō 禪門鍛鍊說 (KR6q0150, X63 n1259), a distinctive thirteen-chapter Chán pedagogical treatise structurally modelled on Sūn Wǔzǐ’s Art of War 孫子兵法 and deploying military-strategic vocabulary throughout. Jièxiǎn’s self-preface places his own lineage-affiliation with the Tiānmù Mìyún Yuánwù 天目密雲圓悟 / Sānfēng Fǎzàng 三峰法藏 circle — a positioning that situated him within the most contested lineage-dispute axis of the mid-17th-century Chinese Chán establishment.
