Shī Bāngyào 施邦曜 (1585–1644), Ěrtāo 爾韜, hào Sìmíng 四明 (whence prefaces address him as Sìmíng Shī gōng 四明施公); posthumous title from the Southern-Míng régime Zhōngjiè 忠介, re-canonised by the Qīng Qiánlóng emperor as Zhōngmǐn 忠愍 in the Qīndìng Shèngcháo xùnjié zhū chén lù 欽定勝朝殉節諸臣錄 (1776). Native of Yúyáo 餘姚 (Shàoxīng, Zhèjiāng) — Wáng Yángmíng’s home county, whence the tóngyì hòuxué (‘a later student of the same place’) self-designation in his preface to the Yángmíng xiānshēng jí yào. Jìnshì of Wànlì 41 / guǐchǒu (1613) — note that Wikipedia gives Wànlì 47 / jǐwèi (1619), but the standard Míngshǐ and CBDB place him in 1613. Refused alliance with Wèi Zhōngxián during Tiānqǐ and was demoted to Zhāngzhōu zhīfǔ 漳州知府, in which capacity he subdued the maritime rebels Liú Xiāng 劉香 and his band; served in Fújiàn for some eight years across promotions as fùshǐ and zuǒ cānzhèng, then transferred to Sìchuān àncháshǐ, Fújiàn zuǒ bùzhèngshǐ, Nánjīng / Běijīng Guānglùsì qīng, and at length Tōngzhèngshǐ and Zuǒ fù dū yùshǐ (1643). In the Huáng Dàozhōu impeachment case of Chóngzhēn 15 / 1642 his refusal to forward the appeal of Tú Zhòngjí 涂仲吉 (with the celebrated note ‘Shū bù bì shàng, lùn bù kě bù cún’ 疏不必上,論不可不存) ended in his being stripped of office. When Lǐ Zìchéng entered Běijīng in Chóngzhēn jiǎshēn (1644) and the Chóngzhēn emperor hanged himself, Shī first attempted suicide by the cord (rescued by his servant), then took arsenic mixed with wine in the street and died — ‘the blood spurted and he died’. Throughout his career in Fújiàn he had laboured at compiling and editing the writings of Wáng Yángmíng, his fellow-countryman; the principal product is the Yángmíng xiānshēng jí yào (KR4e0245) in three structural divisions — Lǐxuébiān 理學編, Jīngjìbiān 經濟編, and Wénzhāngbiān 文章編 — first printed at Zhāngzhōu in Chóngzhēn yǐhài / 1635, with his own preface and four further prefaces by Lín Hán 林釬, 王志道, 顏繼祖, and others.
