Shíwèi 時蔚, zì Wànfēng 萬峰 (“Ten Thousand Peaks”); often referred to as Wànfēng Shíwèi 萬峰時蔚 or Dèngwèi Shíwèi 鄧尉時蔚 from his abbacy. Yuán → early-Míng LínjìYángqí Chán master. Born 元成宗大德七年癸卯八月廿九日午時 = 1303-10-18 Gregorian; died 明洪武十四年辛酉正月廿九日 = 1381-03-03, age 79. Native of Lèqīng 樂清 (Zhèjiāng); lay surname Jīn 金.
Formation. At 13 took tonsure under Shēngjiǎngzhǔ 昇講主 at Yǎnqìngsì 演慶寺. At 16 became a fully-ordained monk; at 19 took full precepts. Visited Hǔpǎo Zhǐyán 虎跑止巖, given the sān bù shì 三不是 gōngàn. Returned to Míngzhōu Dápéng Fójìshān 明州達蓬佛跡山 for solitary practice. Later met Qiānyán Yuáncháng 千巖元長 (1284–1357) and received final yìnkě.
Abbacy. Sūzhōu Dèngwèishān Shèngēnsì 蘇州鄧蔚山聖恩寺 (= 鄧尉, in late-Yuán/early-Míng — opened fǎ there for thirty years, the famous “Wànfēng” mountain).
Disciples. Major fǎsì include Wúniàn Shèngxué 無念勝學, Bǎocáng Pǔchí 寶藏普持, Hǎizhōu Pǔcí 海舟普慈.
Work. KR6q0598 《萬峰和尚語錄》 1 juan, J40 B492, compiled by fǎsì Pǔshòu 普壽 jí. Despite the catalog dynasty 明, the master is more accurately described as a Yuán-Míng-transition figure.
