Northern-Sòng cí-poet, zì Shūyuán 叔原, hào Xiǎoshān 小山. Youngest son of the councillor and cí-master Yàn Shū 晏殊 (991–1055); native of Línchuān 臨川 (Jiāngxī). Despite his father’s high office, Jǐdào never reached substantive office and lived in straitened circumstances, holding only minor posts such as the Yǐngchāngfǔ prefectural sub-magistrate. His circle included Sū Shì 蘇軾, Huáng Tíngjiān 黃庭堅, and the merchant-musician Shěn Lián 沈廉 (and his daughters Lián 蓮, Hóng 鴻, Pín 蘋, Yún 雲, the famous “four women” of the Xiǎoshān cí prefaces). Author of the Xiǎoshān cí KR4j0010 in 1 juǎn, the most distinguished collection of Northern-Sòng xiǎolìng 小令 after his father’s Zhūyù cí KR4j0001 and a touchstone of the personal, recollective lyric. Famously withdrew an early collection on Huáng Tíngjiān’s advice; the 1106 (Chóngníng 5) preface by Huáng for Xiǎoshān cí is one of the most-quoted Sòng cí-prefaces. Lifedates not given exactly in any surviving record; the conventional bracket ca. 1030 – ca. 1106 is reconstructed from his father’s lifespan and the Huáng Tíngjiān preface.
