Southern Sòng Vinaya scholar Zhìruì 智瑞 (lifedates not preserved), abbot (zuòzhǔ 座主) of the Jílèyuàn 極樂院 at Yáojiāng 姚江 in Huìjī jùn 會稽郡 (modern Shàoxīng region). The principal datum about his life is preserved in his own preface-letter (Jiādìng jǐsì zhòngqiū wàngrì 嘉定己巳仲秋望日 = 15th day of the 8th month of Jiādìng 2 = September 15, 1209) responding to the thirty Vinaya questions submitted by the Japanese pilgrim 俊芿 Shunjō and preserved in the second of the three answer-sets in Lǜzōng wèndá (KR6k0256, X1108). Zhìruì’s letter modestly describes his relation to Shunjō as having “long known the fragrance of [Shunjō’s] name without yet seeing the splendour of the courtyard” (jiǔ wén míngzì zhī xiāng wèi zhān tíngjiǎo zhī xiù 久聞名字之香未瞻庭角之秀), and signs as “Huìjī jùn Yáojiāng Jílè zuòzhǔ Zhìruì”. His doctrinal positions in the Wèndá are firmly within the Nánshān Vinaya tradition; he engages closely with the Tōngzhēn jì of 了然 Liǎorán, citing it as a parallel authority.
