Senior Yuán-period 元 Censorate official, “Central-Plains elegant-tune” Yuányòu-style poet. Shìkāi 士開; posthumous shì Wénzhēn 文貞. Native of Dàngshān 碭山 in the Jiāngběi (north-of-the-Yangtze) region (modern Ānhuī).

Career. Zhì-yuán-era recommended as Jìzhōu jiàoshòu 冀州教授. Under Tiān-lì-era rose to Shǎnxī zhūdào xíngtái yùshǐ zhōngchéng 陜西諸道行臺御史中丞 (Vice-Censor-in-Chief at the Shǎnxī Mobile Censorate).

Poetic distinction. A Jiāngběi-region poet, identifiable in literary-historical terms as outside the Southern-Sòng Jiānghú and Yùzhāng (Jiāngxī) schools dominant in late-Sòng-and-early-Yuán southern verse. The Sìkù editors place him in the Yuányòu gé (Yuányòu era 1086–1094 style — of Sū Shì, Huáng Tíngjiān) tradition — chōngróng xiányǎ (harmonious-vast, leisurely-and-refined). The “Central-Plains elegant-tune” tradition.

Collection. Cáo Wénzhēn gōng shījí KR4d0467 in 10 juàn — alternative title Hànquán màngǎo 漢泉漫藁 — compiled by his son Cáo Fùhēng 曹復亨 (Jiāngnán zhūdào xíngtái guǎngōu) with the assistance of the Guózǐjiān student Hú Yì 胡益. Prefaced originally by Zhāng Mèngchén 張夢臣, Ōuyáng Xuán 歐陽玄, Sū Tiānjué 蘇天爵, and Lǚ Zhòngshí 呂仲實. The Quánzhēn Daoist master Wú Quánjié 吳全節 supplied the Zhìyuán wùyín (1338) . The Hòulù (1 juàn) is Cáo Jiàn 曹鑑’s imperially-commissioned biographical-memorial supplement.
