Chǔyuán 楚圓

Línjì-school Chán master of the Northern Sòng, styled Shíshuāng Chǔyuán 石霜楚圓 after his long residence at Shíshuāng shān 石霜山 in Tánzhōu 潭州 (Húnán), and often known simply by his dharma-title Címíng 慈明. Native of Quánzhōu 全州 (Guǎngxī), lay surname Lǐ 李. Dates 986 – Bǎoyuán 2 (1039), shì 54, xià 32 (per DILA A001439 and the Bǔ xù gāosēng zhuàn). DILA also records a Wikidata identity (Q45432907) and CBDB id 0040407.

The sixth-generation heir from Línjì Yìxuán (義玄), Chǔyuán became a dharma-heir of 善昭 Fényáng Shànzhāo at the age of twenty-two after travelling to Fényáng with his companions Shǒuzhī 守芝 and Gǔquán 穀泉; he served Shànzhāo for seven years (a variant tradition gives twelve) before receiving transmission. He later taught successively at Nányuán Guǎnglì Chányuàn 南源廣利禪院 in Yuánzhōu, Dàowú shān 道吾山, Shíshuāng Chóngshèng Chányuàn 石霜崇勝禪院, Fúyán Chányuàn 福嚴禪院 at Nányuè, and the Xīnghuà Chányuàn 興化禪院 in Tánzhōu, where he died in the first lunar month of Bǎoyuán 2.

His editorial hand produced the three-juan Fényáng Wúdé chánshī yǔlù 汾陽無德禪師語錄 (KR6q0054), a compilation of his teacher’s sermons and verses. A separate one-juan Shíshuāng Chǔyuán chánshī yǔlù 石霜楚圓禪師語錄 (Xuzangjing, X69) preserves his own sayings; further sayings are collected in the Xù gǔzūnsù yǔyào 續古尊宿語要. His two outstanding dharma-heirs — Huánglóng Huìnán 黃龍慧南 and Yángqí Fānghuì 楊岐方會 — founded the two sub-lineages (Huánglóng and Yángqí) into which the later Línjì school bifurcated and through which it passed to Koryŏ Sŏn and Kamakura-era Japanese Rinzai.
