Yǎngzhuō Zhèngmíng 養拙正明 (? – 1649), biéhào Yǎngzhuō 養拙. Late-Míng / early-Qīng Línjì (Yángqí-branch) Chán master, sole dharma-heir of Wǔfēng Rúxué 如學 五峰如學 (1585–1633) and abbot of Dàwéi Mìyìnsì 大溈密印寺 on Dàwéishān (Níngxiāng, Húnán) from Chóngzhēn 10 dīngchǒu (1637) until his death in Shùnzhì 6 jǐchǒu spring (1649). Thirty-sixth-generation dharma-heir of Cáoqī 曹谿 by the reckoning of his own yǔlù. Native of Púzhōu 蒲州 (河東, southwest Shānxī), lay surname Cháng 常, second son of Cháng Lùshān 祿山; his xíngshí 行實 records his mother’s birth-dream of a numinous stranger promising a “precious son.” At sixteen sùi (approx. 1615 if his first Jīnsù stay at twenty-five = 1625) he conceived the thought of leaving the household after a sunset vision of “how vast the world, how could I be cramped here”; at twenty he tonsured at Nánhǎi Pǔtuó 南海普陀 under Tiānyī Rúxiù 天衣如繡. After three years of guānyīn recitation and basic training he wandered through the major Línjì seats (Jīnsù, Huángbò, Jīnlíng Jǐtuólín) and at twenty-five entered Jīnsù 金粟 under Mìyún Yuánwù 密雲圓悟 (1566–1642), where his decisive awakening came on a water-carrying assignment under Mìyún’s staff (the “smashed water-pail” episode, dǎpò shuǐtǒng 打破水桶). He then attached himself to Rúxué — initially as Rúxué’s junior at Jīnsù, afterwards at Nánjīng Hóngjìsì and Dàwéi Tóngqìngsì. Rúxué commissioned him as jiānyuàn of the Dàwéi community on Chóngzhēn 6.1.15 (1633); on Rúxué’s death that summer in Nánjīng, Zhèngmíng received the Láiyuán fúzǐ 來源拂子 via Zhìlóng 智隆 as sole heir. Between 1633 and 1637 he lived in retreat on Dàwéi; in Chóngzhēn 10 (1637) he accepted the qǐng of the elder 大圜 and took the abbacy of the long-ruined Mìyìnsì (sister-temple to Rúxué’s Tóngqìng). He held Mìyìn through the dynastic transition; his letters to Mìyún in the early 1640s give a densely-dated training chronology. Before his death in Shùnzhì jǐchǒu (1649) he sent his hand-written summons and sēngjiālí robe to his own heir Huìshān Zhìhǎi 智海 (then at Héngshān 毘盧洞), commanding him to continue the abbacy.
