Fǎqīng 法清 (Táng / Yángzhōu Chánzhìsì)

A different Fǎqīng: mid-Táng Cí’ēn 慈恩 / Yogācāra master, gate-disciple (門人) of 崇俊 Chóngjùn at Hángzhōu Tiānzhúsì 杭州天竺寺 and at Yángzhōu Chánzhìsì 楊州禪智寺. DILA Authority A013848. Honorific reference Lǜbó Qīnggōng 律伯清公 (“Vinaya-master Qīnggōng”). Lifedates unrecorded; productive period in the Dàlì 大曆 era (766–779) of Táng Dàizōng 代宗.

Co-editor (集疏 jí-shū — “compiler-of-subcommentary”) of Chóng-jùn’s Fǎhuá jīng xuán-zàn jué-zé jì (KR6d0029, X34n0637), described in the preface (by Cáng-zhū 藏諸 of Wéi-yáng Lóng-xīng-sì 惟楊龍興寺, dated Dà-lì 3 spring first month = 768 CE) as having “interpretation, practice, and ethical conduct, sequentially upholding the master’s footsteps; daily increasing in study, not yet daring to surpass the indigo [as the proverb 青出於藍]; yearly accumulating interpretive merit, partially achieving secondary-sage rank; in expounding the tripiṭaka for more than ten years.”

The preface attests that Chóngjùn drafted the work (草創之。討論之) and Fǎqīng “embellished and polished” it (修飾之。閏色之), expanding it to its final eight-juan form (the four-juan recension in the canon may represent a partial or condensed transmission). The preface concludes: “By passing through these two worthies, the meaning has no remaining lacunae” (經此二賢。義無遺矣).
