Hǎiyún 海雲

Late-Tang Esoteric Buddhist monk; Vajradhātu-and-Garbhadhātu lineage transmitter and compiler of esoteric-school xiāngchéng 相承 (“master-and-disciple succession”) records. Lifedates not preserved; floruit late-Tang Esoteric school period (mid-late ninth century).

His sole attested work is the Liǎngbù dàfǎ xiāngchéng shīzī fùfǎ jì 兩部大法相承師資付法記 — also known by its short title Jīntāi liǎngjiè shīzī xiāngchéng 金胎兩界師資相承 (KR6j0748, X59 no. 1073) — a one-fascicle compilation of the lineage-genealogies of the Vajradhātu (Jīngāngjiè) and Garbhadhātu (Tāizàngjiè) Esoteric transmissions in Tang China, organized as a parallel master-and-disciple succession record. The work is one of the most important sources for the institutional history of the Tang Esoteric school. Per DILA A001761.
