Zàoxuán 造玄

Late-Tang Esoteric Buddhist monk and lineage-transmitter; resident at the Cíēnsì 慈恩寺 of the Chángān Zuǒjiē 左街 (left-ward), datable per his preface to Xiántōng 6.8.17 (8 September 865 CE). Honorific āshélí 阿闍梨 (ācārya).

His attested work is the Tāijīn liǎngjiè xuèmài 胎金兩界血脈 (KR6j0749, X59 no. 1074) — a one-fascicle Esoteric xuèmài 血脈 (“blood-line”) lineage-record of the Garbhadhātu and Vajradhātu transmissions, composed (or fùshǔ 付屬, “entrusted”) on Xiántōng 6.8.17 (8 September 865 CE) at the Cíēnsì. The opening colophon: Dà Táng Xiántōng liù nián bā yuè shí qī rì Chángānchéng zuǒjiē Cíēnsì Zàoxuán āshélí fùshǔ shīzī xuèmài 大唐咸通六年八月十七日長安城左街慈恩寺造玄阿闍梨付屬師資血脈.

The work parallels 海雲’s Jīn-tāi liǎng-jiè shī-zī xiāng-chéng (KR6j0748) as one of the principal late-Tang dual-maṇḍala lineage records and is an important source for the institutional history of the Tang Esoteric school. Per DILA A001813.
