Gān Shǐ 甘始
A fāngshì 方士 of Tàiyuán 太原 active in the late Hàn / early Wèi, named in the Hòu Hàn shū (j. 82 Fāngshù zhuàn) and 《三國志·魏志》 j. 29 alongside Zuǒ Cí 左慈 and Xī Jiǎn 郄儉 as one of the fāngshì gathered at the court of Cáo Cāo 曹操. Cited in the Yàolù 藥錄 (KR3e0108) and in Gě Hóng’s 葛洪 葛洪 Bàopǔzǐ nèipiān (KR5f0019) as having lived “more than three hundred years among men” through his command of breath-cultivation and the use of immortality drugs, including tiānméndōng 天門冬. He stands in the bĕncǎo and Daoist hagiographic record as a paradigmatic late-Hàn xiānrén 仙人 figure of the fāngshì / yǎngshēng tradition.
