Hakuin 白隠

Hakuin Ekaku 白隠慧鶴 (1686–1769), Japanese Rinzai master and the central figure in the eighteenth-century revival of Japanese Rinzai Zen; his re-working of Cáoshān’s wǔwèi 五位 (“five positions”) embedded the Cáodòng doctrinal apparatus within the Rinzai koan curriculum that descended from his teaching.
