Nà Xìn 納信

Early-Qīng lay Buddhist patron of Chán publishing. Monastic (or lay-Buddhist) name Báishān Nà Xìn 白山納信 — the prefix Báishān 白山 (“White Mountain”) suggests a northern Chinese or Manchurian provenance (likely related to the Mǎnzhōu Chángbáishān 長白山 homeland sacred to the Qīng imperial house). No biographical information is preserved beyond his dated preface.

Sponsored the 1708 (Kāngxī 47) Jiāxīng-Canon publication of the Mùniú tú sòng KR6q0164 compiled by Méng’ān Chāogé 夢菴超格 and edited in its final form by Jiālíng Xìngyīn 迦陵性音. His preface modestly acknowledges his status as “a layman without the fully-accomplished practice of ox-herding” (běn súzǐ wèi chún mùniú zhī gōng 本俗子未純牧牛之功) but records his delight on encountering Chāogé’s compiled verses and his subsequent resolve to sponsor the publication “to benefit the world under heaven” (gōng zhī tiānxià 公之天下). Dated Kāngxī wùzǐ (1708), Buddha’s birthday.
