Xínghǎi 行海
Mid-Qīng Chán monk. Lifedates, native place, and monastic lineage all unrecorded. Self-styled hòu xué shāmén 後學沙門 (“junior-disciple śramaṇa”) in the only surviving attribution.
One surviving work: the Chán zōng zhǐ zhǎng 禪宗指掌 KR6q0175, a brief eight-part Chán catechism first printed in 1787 (Qiánlóng 52) at the Tiānníngsì 天寧寺 of Chángzhōu 常州 (Jiāngsū), and subsequently reprinted in 1893 at Tàibáifēng 太白峯 in Yínxiàn 鄞縣 (near Níngbō).
Distinct from the earlier 大方行海 Dàfāng Xínghǎi (DILA A012051, 1604–1670), a MíngQīng transitional Chán master whose lifedates preclude authorship of the 1787 text.

Xínghǎi 行海 (Dàfāng Xínghǎi 大方行海)
A different Xínghǎi: LínjìYángqí chánshī of the Mìyún line. Hào Dàfāng 大方. Born 萬曆甲辰 6/7 巳時 = 1604-07-03 Gregorian; died 庚戌 2/5 子時 = 1670-02-24 Gregorian, shìshòu 67, fǎlà 36. Native of Tóngxiāng 桐鄉 (Jiāxīng); lay surname Qián 錢.
Lineage. LínjìYángqí dharma-heir of Fúshí Tōngxián 通賢 浮石通賢.
Formation. At 20 vegetarian; jìngtǔ at Yúnqī 雲棲. At 29 (1632) tonsured at Jìngshān Míngzhūtáng under Wúyì shī 無異師. Awakening at 30; full precepts under 圓悟 Mìyún Yuánwù at age 31 (1635) at Tiāntóng; xūkōng fěnsuì boundary-experience. At 35 (1639) met Ěrmì at Xiǎnshèng. At 47 (1650) found the ānlè 安樂 under Fúshí Tōngxián.
Abbacy. 康熙八 = 1669: took up Jiāngsū Lóujiāng Chándēngān 江蘇婁江禪燈菴.
Work. KR6q0503 《大方禪師語錄》 6 juan, Jiāxīng Canon J36 B366, compiled by fǎsì Chāomíng 超鳴 biān; juan 6 xíngshí + tǎmíng preserves lifedates.
