Chì Xūzǐ 赤須子

Legendary immortal (xiānrén 仙人) of the Liè xiān zhuàn 列仙傳 hagiographic tradition, recorded as a fāngshì 方士 in service to Duke Mù of Qín 秦穆公 (or, in variant traditions, an ancient yǎngshēng practitioner of the Hàn). In the Yàolù 藥錄 (KR3e0108) and the immortality-drug literature dependent on Gě Hóng’s 葛洪 葛洪 Bàopǔzǐ nèipiān (KR5f0019), Chì Xūzǐ is cited as a witness for the rejuvenating efficacy of tiānméndōng 天門冬: the anecdotal tradition reports that under its regimen his fallen teeth grew back. The name (the “red-bearded master”) is itself a hagiographic epithet rather than a historical personal name.
