Dázūn 達尊 (Shíshuāng Ěrzhān Dázūn 石霜爾瞻達尊)

Early-Qīng LínjìYángqí Chán master, the post-Míng-Qīng-transition restorer of the ancient Shíshuāngshān seat 瀏陽石霜山 in Liúyáng, Húnán — the Chán ancestral seat of Shíshuāng Qìngzhū 石霜慶諸 (807–888) and Címíng Shíshuāng Chǔyuán 慈明石霜楚圓 (986–1039). Fǎhuì 法諱 Dázūn 達尊, hào Ěrzhān 爾瞻 (from a Shījīng allusion). Lay surname Táng 唐, of Níngbō Yínxiàn 寧波鄞縣. Lifedates 萬曆 36 – 康熙 2 癸卯 9月 = 1608 – October-November 1663, age 56 suì / sēnglà 31 per the Běnxiù tǎmíng at KR6q0420 juan 2. Principal dharma-heir of Dùnsǒu Zhìjì 鈍叟智際 at Dōngmíng Lǜluóān 東明綠蘿菴 on Héngshān — a lesser-documented Mìyún Yuánwù sub-line master. Mùchén Dàomǐn’s preface identifies Dázūn as “Lóngchí Huàn lǎorén xià xíngzì fǎsì zhōng dìyī qiáochǔ 龍池幻老人下行字法嗣中第一翹楚” — first-rank among the 行-generation dharma-heirs of Huànyǒu Zhèngchuán 幻有正傳 (1549–1614, Mìyún’s teacher).

Life. Family near Pǔtuósì 補陀寺 (Níngbō). One day found an abandoned pútuán + jièyī set at the roadside; took it to Fúquánshān 福泉山 and requested tonsure from Yuánmíngshī 圜明師. Served Yuánmíng three years. Chóngzhēn 乙亥 winter (= 1635 winter): received full precepts from Mìyún Yuánwù 密雲圓悟 at Tiāntóngsì at age 28. Subsequent consultation-tour: Jīnsù Chénggōng 乘公, Biànshān Xuěgōng 雪公, Nánjiàn Cíwèn 南澗慈問 (1580–1659). Final sealing at Dōngmíng Lǜluóān 東明綠蘿菴 by Dùnsǒu Zhìjì 際公 on the Jiāshān bōchén jiàn Fó 夾山撥塵見佛 gōngàn and the subsequent yuānyāng xiù 鴛鴦繡 transmission-verse. Five-year attendance at Héngshān with Zhìjì. 乙酉 乙酉 (1645): Zhìjì fled the transition-warfare to Tánzhōu and died there; Nányuánshī 南源師 brought the body back to Héngyuè for burial.

Shíshuāng abbacy (1646–1663). 順治 3 丙戌 (= 1646): accepted invitation from Liúyáng Shíshuāng Běnhuō 瀏陽石霜本豁 and other patrons to take the Shíshuāng abbacy. 18-year tenure restoring the ancient zǔtíng, with a brief 1658 monastic-dispute withdrawal followed by a 1659 return. 1660: restored Shíshuāng Qìngzhū’s ancestor-pagoda and petitioned Mùchén Dàomǐn 木陳道忞 at Tiāntóng for the restoration- 記. 1663: built his own pre-mortem shòutǎ 壽塔 adjacent to Qìngzhū’s ancestor-pagoda; illness followed immediately. Died sitting cross-legged at 亥時 on an unspecified night in the 9th lunar month of Kāngxī 2 = October/November 1663. 7-day post-death samādhi; rain-cessation on cremation-day; ashes interred 10月9日 (= early November 1663).

Historical significance. Dázūn’s 18-year Shíshuāng restoration is the single most consequential Qīng-era revival of a Línjì-tradition zǔtíng seat in Húnán after the ZhāngXiànzhōng devastation. His parallels are Dàxiū Zhū at Cáoxī Nánhuá (1654–56, at KR6q0413) and Zhàngxuě Tōngzuì at Chéngdū Zhāojué (from 1663, at KR6q0415) — three near-simultaneous post-1644 Chán zǔtíng restoration-programs at three different historically-central sites.
