Zhèng Chéngdé 鄭澄德 (style 學川 Xuéchuān, late Qīng)
A late-Qīng lay-Buddhist (jūshì 居士) who, together with his brother 鄭澄源 Zhèng Chéngyuán (style 學烺 Xuélàng), produced the Ēmítuó jīng zhù 阿彌陀經註 KR6p0027, a Pure Land devotional manual completed in 咸豐 11 (1861) and printed shortly thereafter. The brothers signed jointly as 淨業學人菩薩戒鄭澄德(學川)鄭澄源(學烺) (“Pure-Karma students who have received the bodhisattva precepts”). Lifedates not preserved.
The brothers belonged to the late-Qīng Zōngjìngtáng 宗鏡堂 lay-Buddhist publishing circle in Hangzhou (named for 永明延壽 Yǒngmíng Yánshòu’s Zōngjìng lù); the preface to KR6p0027 by Xǔ Yuèshēn 許樾身 of Rénhé 仁和 records that Zhèng Chéngdé compiled a forty-eight-volume Pure Land-oriented collectanea (the Zōngjìngtáng cóngshū 宗鏡堂叢書), of which the Ēmítuó jīng zhù with its accompanying daily-practice schedule (Xī dìng kè 西定課) was the first item to be cut and circulated. The manual is part of the late-Qīng lay-Buddhist devotional movement that includes 彭際清 Péng Jìqīng’s Yuēlùn trilogy and 魏源 Wèi Yuán’s Jìngtǔ sì jīng.
