Chén Xiànzhāng 陳獻章 (1428–1500), zì Gōngfǔ 公甫, hào Shízhāi 石齋 (later Báishā 白沙 — from his native village Báishālǐ 白沙里). Native of Xīnhuì 新會 (Guǎngzhōu region, Guǎngdōng). Pupil of Wú Yǔbì 吳與弼 (KR4e0122); went beyond Wú’s orthodox Zhūzǐxué into a contemplative, jìngzuò (still-sitting meditation) and zìdé (self-realization) frame that explicitly anticipates Wáng Yángmíng’s 王陽明 xīnxué (Heart-Learning). Founder of the Báishā xuépài 白沙學派. Entered the Tàixué (Imperial Academy); sat for the Hànlín examination on Yáng Pǔ’s recommendation; achieved no rank beyond Hànlín jiǎntǎo; the xuézhě (gentleman-scholar) status decisively outweighs the official position. Principal disciple: Zhàn Ruòshuǐ 湛若水 (湛若水), founder of the Gānquán xuépài. Míng shǐ j. 283 (Rúlín zhuàn 1).
