Běncǎo Shù 本草述 (30 juǎn, completed 1664) by the late-Míng / early-Qīng physician 劉若金 Liú Ruòjīn (hào Yúnmì 雲密, 1584–1665). An ambitious pharmacopoeia attempting to integrate the qìwèishēngjiàng 氣味升降 doctrine of the JīnYuán four masters with the Běnjīng substance corpus. The prose was famously verbose (“文辭蔓衍,讀者幾莫測其所歸”) and the work circulated only patchily. It was rescued from obscurity by 楊時泰’s critical condensation in 32 juǎn, the Běncǎo shù gōuyuán 本草述鉤元 (KR3ec052, 1833 / printed 1842), which reduced Liú’s verbose original by approximately 40% while making the implicit qìwèishēngjiàng logic explicit.
