About the work
A major early-Republican-period (1916) expansion of 俞根初 Yú Gēnchū’s late-Qīng vernacular Tōngsú Shānghán lùn 通俗傷寒論, prepared by the Shàoxīng-region physician 何廉臣 Hé Liánchén. The work — 12 juan in extent — combines Yú Gēnchū’s original vernacular framework with Hé’s substantial editorial expansion drawing on the full range of Qīng commentarial sources and including discussion of contemporary clinical observations. The work is one of the most-cited Republican-period Shānghán references, especially within the Zhèjiāng school.
Abstract
The composition date 1916 is given by Hé’s preface. The work is the Zēngdìng (Expanded) version; Hé’s parallel Chóngdìng tōngsú Shānghán lùn 重訂通俗傷寒論 (KR3ef036) is an even more thoroughly re-edited version published 1934 (posthumous). Hé was central to the early-Republican Shàoxīng medical scene and the editor of the influential Shàoxīng yīyào xué bào 紹興醫藥學報 journal (1908–1930s).
