Indicators of Essentials in Women’s Medicine by 徐大椿 (Xú Dàchūn = Xú Língtāi = Xú Huíxī, 1693–1771, mid-Qīng)
About the work
A five-juǎn systematic gynecology treatise by the great Qīng polymath-physician Xú Dàchūn 徐大椿 (Língtāi 靈胎 / Huíxī 洄溪, 1693–1771) of Wújiāng 吳江 (Sūzhōu prefecture, Jiāngsū). The work is structured by topical mén 門: jīnghòu 經候 (menstrual cycle), jīngbì 經閉 (amenorrhoea), bēnglòu 崩漏, dàixià 帶下, qiúzǐ 求子, tāiqián 胎前, línchǎn 臨產, chǎnhòu 產後, and zábìng 雜病. Each entry follows Xú’s distinctive doctrinal-clinical-pharmacological argumentation: a brief étiological statement from canonical sources, a màifǎ 脈法 (pulse-diagnosis) note, a zhìfǎ 治法 (therapeutic-method) statement specifying the cardinal class of drugs required, and one or more xuǎnfāng 選方 (selected formulas) with full drug-by-drug commentary on why each ingredient is included. The drug-by-drug jiěfāng 解方 (formula-explanation) is a signature of Xú’s clinical-pharmacological pedagogy and the principal interest of the work.
Prefaces
The KR hxwd recension preserves the body of the work but no separable author-preface is present in the _001.txt head; the text begins directly with the jīnghòu mén 經候門 doctrinal opening.
Abstract
Xú Dàchūn (1693–1771, CBDB 61225) is the foremost Qīng polymath-physician — author of the Yīxué yuánliú lùn 醫學源流論 (KR3e0100, 1757), 蘭台軌範 Lántái guǐfàn (1764), 神農本草經百種錄 Shénnóng běncǎo jīng bǎizhǒng lù (1736), 傷寒論類方 Shānghán lùn lèifāng, and 洄溪醫案 Huíxī yī’àn. His scholarly orientation is the mature Qīng kǎojù 考據 (evidential research) tradition applied to medical texts: rigorous philological method, polemical independence (notably his sharp criticism of 李東垣 Lǐ Dōngyuán’s Bǔzhōng yìqì tāng school and 朱丹溪 Zhū Dānxī’s xiānghuǒ 相火 doctrine), and a return to Shānghán lùn / Jīnguì yàoluè canonical foundations.
The Nǚkē zhǐyào applies Xú’s distinctive evidential-philological method to gynecology. The work refuses both the Lǐ-Zhū late-Míng tonifying-and-clearing synthesis and the popular 傅青主 Fù Qīngzhǔ Wándài tāng / Shēnghuà tāng formulary, returning instead to a canonical 張仲景 Zhāng Zhòngjǐng framework supplemented by Sòng-Yuán authorised formulae (Sìwù tāng, Bāzhēn tāng, Yùzhú sǎn 玉燭散 = Sìwù tāng + Tiáowèi chéngqì tāng 調胃承氣湯, Sānhé tāng 三和湯). The work is therefore one of the principal Qīng jīngfāng 經方 (classical-formula) school gynecological reformulations, parallel in spirit to Xú’s other kǎojù medical writings.
Composition is bracketed between Xú’s first medical publication (Shénnóng běncǎo jīng bǎizhǒng lù, 1736) and his death in 1771; notBefore 1740 / notAfter 1771 is a defensible range. The work was included in the 徐靈胎醫書 Xú Língtāi yīshū collected editions issued in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
The work’s distinctive jiěfāng 解方 method — drug-by-drug doctrinal commentary on each formula — is comparable to that of 汪昂 Wāng Áng’s 醫方集解 Yīfāng jíjiě (1682) but applied specifically to gynecology. It became a standard reference for late-Qīng gynecological teaching, particularly in the Sūzhōu medical lineages.

Other points of interest
Xú Dàchūn’s medical polemics in the Yīxué yuánliú lùn contain a famous critique of contemporary gynecology that informs the Nǚkē zhǐyào: he rejects the routine bǔzhōng yìqì tāng prescription for menstrual disorders, arguing that mid-Qīng physicians were applying Lǐ Dōngyuán’s spleen-stomach doctrine indiscriminately without correct syndrome-discrimination. The Nǚkē zhǐyào exemplifies this corrective programme, returning to Shānghán lùn / Jīnguì canonical principles for gynecological practice.
