The Refined Essentials of Women’s Medicine by 馮兆張 (Féng Zhàozhāng, early Qīng)
About the work
A three-juǎn systematic gynecology work by the early-Qīng physician Féng Zhàozhāng 馮兆張 (zì Chǔzhān 楚瞻), forming an integral section of his major medical encyclopedia 馮氏錦囊秘錄 Féngshì jǐnnáng mìlù (The Secret Records from Féng’s Brocade Bag, 50 juǎn, completed 1702). The work is structured by topical mén Each topical mén opens with a substantial zhūlùn 諸論 (collected discussions) gathering classical and Sòng-Yuán-Míng authorities (frequently citing the Sùwèn KR3e0001, 王冰 Wáng Bīng, 李東垣 Lǐ Dōngyuán, 朱丹溪 Zhū Dānxī, and 孫思邈 Sūn Sīmiǎo) before proceeding to formulary practice.
Prefaces
The KR hxwd recension carries the body of the work but no separable preface; that material is associated with the parent Jǐnnáng mìlù. The opening of the yuèjīng mén offers a substantial doctrinal opening establishing the Sòng fùrén yǐ xuè wéi běn 婦人以血為本 framework with citations from the Sùwèn, Wáng Bīng’s commentary, and Lǐ Dōngyuán’s Píwèi lùn 脾胃論 (KR3e0053).
Abstract
Féng Zhàozhāng 馮兆張 (zì Chǔzhān 楚瞻) was a Hǎiyán 海鹽 (Zhèjiāng) physician of the early Qīng who completed the Féngshì jǐnnáng mìlù 馮氏錦囊秘錄 in 50 juǎn in 1702 (Kāngxī 41). The Jǐnnáng mìlù is a major early-Qīng systematic medical encyclopedia, organised by sub-discipline: internal medicine, paediatrics, gynecology, shānghán, wàikē (external medicine), pulse-diagnosis, and materia medica. The Nǚkē jīngyào is the gynecology section, comprising approximately three juǎn of the parent work. The work survives both as part of the Jǐnnáng mìlù parent compilation and as separately-extracted standalone editions, the latter circulated as Nǚkē jīngyào from the late Kāngxī era onwards.
Doctrinally Féng combines the Lǐ-Zhū bǔzhōng / zīyīn synthesis with extensive engagement with the Sòng-Yuán canonical tradition, citing Wáng Bīng’s Sùwèn commentary, Sūn Sīmiǎo’s Qiānjīn yàofāng (KR3e0013), 陳自明 Chén Zìmíng’s Fùrén dàquán liángfāng (KR3e0038), and the Héjì júfāng (KR3e0033) directly. The work’s distinctive feature is its emphasis on early-life female constitutional development: Féng argues that constitutional weakness from improperly nourished early adolescence is the principal long-term cause of adult gynecological disorders. The opening of the jīngbìng mén offers detailed advice on the timing of marriage in relation to tiānguǐ 天癸 onset.
The Jǐnnáng mìlù was widely reprinted in the Qīng and Republican periods and remains a standard reference in modern PRC TCM curriculum. The Nǚkē jīngyào is one of its most-extracted sections.

Other points of interest
Féng’s Jǐnnáng mìlù is one of the earliest major Qīng systematic medical compilations and a key bridge between the late-Míng gāngmù synthesis (王肯堂 Wáng Kěntáng, 武之望 Wǔ Zhīwàng) and the imperially-sponsored Yīzōng jīnjiàn of 1742. The work’s wide circulation in popular Qīng medical book markets made it one of the principal channels by which late-Míng gynecological doctrine reached 18th-century practitioners.
