Shěnshì nǚkē jíyào jiānshū 沈氏女科輯要箋疏
Annotated Commentary on the Shen Family’s Compilation of Essentials in Women’s Medicine original compilation by 沈又彭 (Shěn Yòupéng, mid-Qīng); critical annotation (jiānshū) by 張壽頤 (Zhāng Shòuyí = Zhāng Shānléi, 1873–1934)
About the work
A two-juǎn early-Republican-era critical annotated commentary on the Shěnshì nǚkē jíyào KR3ei010 of 沈又彭 Shěn Yòupéng (Yáofēng 堯封, fl. mid-Qiánlóng), prepared by 張壽頤 Zhāng Shòuyí (hào Shānléi 山雷, 1873–1934) of the Lánxī Zhōngyī Zhuānménxuéxiào 蘭谿中醫專門學校 (Zhejiang). The work is one of the foundational Republican-era TCM-college textbooks. Zhāng preserves the full Shěn Yòupéng base-text together with the 王孟英 Wáng Mèngyīng (1808–1868) 1850 annotations (introduced “Wáng Mèngyīng àn” 王孟英按), and adds his own jiānshū 箋疏 (“paratextual commentary”) drawing on twenty-plus years of clinical experience and a critical reading of the entire late-Qīng gynecological literature.
Prefaces
The KR hxwd _000.txt opens with Zhāng Shòuyí’s Xiǎoyǐn 小引 (small introduction) — a substantial doctrinal-historiographic opening. Zhāng surveys the principal gynecological literature: 陳自明 Chén Liángfǔ 陳良甫 (= Chén Zìmíng)‘s Dàquán liángfāng (KR3e0038), 王肯堂 Wáng Kěntáng’s Zhèngzhì zhǔnshéng·Nǚkē (= KR3ei030), 武之望 Wǔ Zhīwàng’s Jìyīn gāngmù (= KR3ei006) — and judges them all “chénchén xiāngyīn, fǔqì mǎnzhǐ” 陳陳相因,腐氣滿紙 (“repetitively derivative, decay reeking from every page”). He singles out the Shěn Yáofēng Nǚkē jíyào as exceptionally fresh, clinically sharp, and original, attributing his own training in gynecological practice to early study of this text. Zhāng notes that recent stone-print editions in the Qiánzhāi yīyào cóngshū 潛齋醫藥叢書 (潛齋醫藥叢書, a Wáng Mèngyīng-school cóngshū) have transcription errors and difficult-to-read passages; he therefore re-set the text and added his own commentary, taking the project as a teaching-text for his Lánxī TCM college courses.
Abstract
張壽頤 Zhāng Shòuyí (1873–1934) was one of the founding teachers of the modern Chinese-medicine college system: after the 1911 revolution he taught at the Lánxī Zhōngyī Zhuānménxuéxiào 蘭谿中醫專門學校 (Zhèjiāng), one of the first formal TCM colleges, where he trained a generation of Republican-era physicians. His major works include the Běncǎo zhèngyì 本草正義 (1932, see KR3ec063), the Zhōngfēng jiàoquán 中風斠詮 (中風斠詮), and the Shānléi yīxué cóngshū 山雷醫學叢書 (山雷醫學叢書) — of which the Shěnshì nǚkē jíyào jiānshū is one of the principal medical-pedagogical components. Composition is dated within Zhāng’s principal TCM-college teaching career: notBefore 1915 / notAfter 1933 brackets the relevant range.
The work is the standard modern TCM gynecology textbook in the Wáng Mèngyīng / Shěn Yòupéng lineage: it preserves Shěn’s mid-Qiánlóng critical-pragmatic original, Wáng’s 1850 Wēnbìng-school commentaries, and adds Zhāng’s jīngfāng-leaning Republican-era critical apparatus. The work has remained in continuous PRC TCM-academy use since publication.
