Cáo Rénbó yīàn lùn 曹仁伯醫案論

Discussions on the Medical Cases of Cáo Rénbó by 曹存心 Cáo Cúnxīn 曹存心 ( Rénbó 仁伯, hào Yuècūn 樂存, 1767–1834), of Chángshú 常熟 (Jiāngsū).

About the work

A single-juǎn casebook of the early-nineteenth-century Chángshú physician Cáo Cúnxīn — one of the most influential clinicians of the Jiāngnán post-Yè Tiānshì tradition. The work is distinguished from the more straightforward case-records of other casebooks by its lùn (discussion) format: each case is followed by an extended editorial discussion (Cáo’s own or his disciple’s) explicating the clinical reasoning at length. This makes it a primary teaching text rather than simply a record. Cáo was deeply influential as a teacher: Wáng Shūhé 王旭高 (王旭高) attended his teaching, as did Wú Jīnshòu 吳金壽 and Liǔ Bǎoyí 柳寶詒 柳寶詒’s teacher Cài Lěngān 蔡冷庵.

The hxwd opening case is a clinical-philosophical lùn discussing male sexual physiology and the relationship of bed-environment, bone-and-tendon climatology, and the 痹 (impediment) syndrome — using Shānghán lùn and Zhōngfēng doctrine as the diagnostic frame. The discussion form here is fully developed: each case is a vehicle for substantive theoretical exposition.

Prefaces

The hxwd _000.txt of KR3ep025 opens directly with the opening case “Pānshǔ Xiāosìyé zhìyàn wánfāng” 藩署蕭四爺治驗丸方 (“Tested-effective pill formula for the Fourth Master of the Surveillance Office Xiāo of the Provincial Administration”) and no formal preface precedes it. No preface in _000.txt.

Abstract

Cáo Cúnxīn 曹存心 (1767–1834, CBDB 88559) — Chángshú (Jiāngsū) physician of the early nineteenth century, conventionally treated as one of the four “Sūzhōu masters” of the post-Yè Tiānshì tradition (alongside Yè Tiānshì’s actual descendants and Yáng Yìn 楊瀜 = Yáng Lìshān 楊立山 and Wáng Jiǔfēng 王九峰 王九峰). His teaching at his Liúyīngtáng 留影堂 studio at Chángshú attracted leading pupils across Jiāngnán and his clinical synthesis — heavy on the jīngluò 經絡 / jīnyè 津液 framework and on the use of light moistening prescriptions — was foundational for the late-Qīng wēnbìng tradition. His other principal works include the Liúyīng yīàn 留影醫案 (the version of his cases anthologised in KR3ep021) and KR3ep095 Yánlíng dìzǐ jìyào 延陵弟子紀要 (a record of his teaching of his disciples).

The composition window 1810–1834 reflects his mature clinical decades up to his death year. The hxwd recension is one of several Cáo casebook recensions and represents the Lùn (discussion-style) version of the cases. The casebook was widely reprinted in the late nineteenth century and was used as a clinical-pedagogical text in the early Republican medical schools.
