About the work
Bīnglú jí 栟櫚集 in 16 juǎn (1 juǎn of poetry, 1 of cí, 14 of prose) is the literary collection of Dèng Sù 鄧肅 (1091–1132), the Tàixué shēng who was expelled from the Imperial Academy for memorialising against the Gènyuè garden’s Huāshí gāng abuses (1122), recommended by Lǐ Gāng 李綱 李綱 in Jìngkāng (1126), and made Yòu zhèngyán 右正言 by Gāozōng during the flight south. The 30-juǎn Bīnglú yíwén recorded by Wáng Míngqīng’s Huīzhú hòulù (with the poetry attached at the end) is no longer extant; the Sìkù editors suspect the present 16-juǎn version is a Jīnrén (Jurchen-period) re-editing — a striking and unusual claim. Dèng’s compromised position toward Yáng Xióng — together with that of Shěn Yǔqiú 沈與求 沈與求 — possibly informed Zhū Xī’s Tōngjiàn gāngmù treatment.
Tiyao
Bīnglú jí in 16 juǎn, by Dèng Sù of the Sòng. According-to Wáng Míngqīng’s Huīzhú hòulù: in Xuānhé rényín (1122), the Gènyuè completed; Huīzōng yùzhì jì (imperially-composed memorial); Lǐ Zhì and Cáo Zǔ each-presented fù; only the tàixué shēng Dèng Sù presented ten poems fully-narrating the huāshí affair. The end-line says: “Dàn yuàn jūnwáng ān wànxìng; pǔzhōng hérì bù chūnfēng”. Decreed to be expelled. Jìngkāng beginning, Lǐ Bójì (= Lǐ Gāng) opened-up the affair and recommended his talent. Recalled-and-interviewed, given jìnshì chūshēn. Later as Yòu zhèngyán — established the name liàngzhí (bright-and-upright) at-the-time. Sù, zì Zhìhóng, of Nánjiàn. Has the wénjí called Bīnglán yíwén in 30 juǎn; poetry attached in the collection — etc. — i.e. this man.
The present version is only poetry 1 juǎn, cí 1 juǎn, prose 14 juǎn — does-not-match the 30-juǎn count. Probably scattered-and-lost-not-complete, also passed through Jīn-people’s re-editing? When Zhāng Bāngchāng usurped, Sù jiànháng (took-back-ways) hastened to Nánjīng. His promotion to Yòu zhèngyán was at this time. His great-cause was roughly similar to Dù Fǔ’s. His Jìngkāng yíngjià háng, Hòu yíngjià háng, and other pieces, also rather close to [Dù] Fǔ’s Fèngxiān compositions. Between Northern and Southern Sòng, can be called a gentleman dǔlì míngjié (firmly-cultivating name-and-integrity).
Further: from Tang and Sòng onward, scholars all honoured Yáng Xióng — under Xīníng finally given canonical pèixiǎng. Yet Sù’s Shū Yáng Xióng shì uniquely points to him as a pànchén (rebel-minister) — wú kěróng yú tiāndì zhī jiān (no place between heaven and earth). With Shěn Yǔqiú’s memorial discussing Wáng Ānshí’s over-honouring of Yáng Xióng — unclear which is earlier-or-later. Yet both are before Zhū Zǐ’s Gāngmù recording Mǎng dàfū. Examining Lù Shēn’s Xīshān yúhuà: Sù was on-good-terms with Zhū Zǐ’s father [Zhū] Sōng. Has the zuìliú guāndài yǐ zhì zhǐbǐ (drunkenly-leaving cap-and-belt as pawn-for-paper-and-brush) joke. Sù has Jì Zhū Wéizhāi shī — telling that affair. So the Gāngmù’s rejection of Yáng Xióng — could-it-be without-having-transmitted Sù’s argument? His shí (insight) being like-this, yí qí lìshēn yǒu běnmò yǐ (appropriate his life-establishment had foundation-and-end). Respectfully collated, Qiánlóng 44 (1779), 3rd month.
Abstract
The Bīnglú jí presents in 16 juǎn about half of what Wáng Míngqīng’s Huīzhú hòulù records as the original 30-juǎn Bīnglán yíwén. The Sìkù editors raise — without resolving — the unusual hypothesis that the present recension was passed through Jīnrén (Jurchen) editorial hands; this would be one of very few documented cases of Jīn reception of a Southern-Sòng patriot’s collection. The historical mechanism is not explained.
The collection has two principal documentary axes. First, the political-poetic record: the ten Gènyuè poems of 1122 (which cost Dèng his Academy place); the Jìngkāng yíngjià háng and Hòu yíngjià háng (compared by the Sìkù editors to Dù Fǔ’s Fèngxiān pieces); various memorials from the Yòu zhèngyán tenure under Gāozōng. Second, the Yáng Xióng historiographic intervention: the Shū Yáng Xióng shì — with Shěn Yǔqiú’s parallel argument KR4d0167 — anticipates Zhū Xī’s Tōngjiàn gāngmù treatment of the Mǎngdàfū entry. The personal connection through Zhū Sōng (Zhū Xī’s father) — preserved by Lù Shēn’s Xīshān yúhuà and Dèng’s own Jì Zhū Wéizhāi shī — supplies a plausible transmission channel.
