About the work
The Shāngǔ qínqù wàipiān 山谷琴趣外篇 is the SBCK three-juǎn form of the cí collection of Huáng Tíngjiān 黃庭堅 (1045–1105), parallel to (and textually older than) the Sìkù Shāngǔ cí in one juǎn KR4j0006. The title — “Outer Pieces of the Qín-Diversions of Shāngǔ” — uses qínqù in its established Sòng sense, cí-as-music-pieces (parallel to Ōuyáng Xiū’s Liùyī cí under the rubric Jīntǐ yuèfǔ 近體樂府), and wàipiān in the Zhuāngzǐ sense to mark them as the secondary-register collateral to the quánjí. The SBCK reprint is from a Sòng-cut witness; Zhāng Yuánjì 張元濟 (1867–1959) of the Commercial Press supplied the modern jiàokān jì 校勘記 (collation notes).
Tiyao
The SBCK qiányán and Zhāng Yuánjì’s jiàokān jì provide the publication note: this text is a Sòngkān (Sòng-engraved) recension of Huáng’s cí, taking three juǎn (where the WYG abbreviated descent took one). Where the Sìkù tíyào attached to KR4j0006 reads the surviving cí corpus in critical relation to Cháo Bǔzhī’s 晁補之 split judgment of Huáng’s cí, the SBCK simply reproduces the Sòng arrangement under the title Qínqù wàipiān; the dialect-retention of 笛 (not 曲) in the Niànnú jiāo singled out by Lù Yóu 陸游 is preserved here, confirming the older recension. — No separate tíyào in the present source file.
Abstract
The Shāngǔ qínqù wàipiān (SBCK 0499) is a parallel branch of Huáng’s cí transmission, descending from a Sòng engraving and reprinted in the Sìbù cóngkān; it preserves variants and an arrangement different from the Máo Jìn 毛晉 Liùshí jiā cí line that the Sìkù took as base. The three-juǎn form is the one referenced by Sòng catalogs (e.g. the Chōngwén zǒngmù and Chén Zhènsūn 陳振孫’s Zhízhāi shūlù jiětí) and is the principal pre-Máo witness for the song-by-song titles, prefatory notes (e.g. 同諸甥待月飲酒賦此 on the opening Niànnú jiāo), and tune-attributions. Modern critical editions (Liú Wénzhōng 劉文忠 and Mǎ Xìngróng 馬興榮, Huáng Tíngjiān cí jiàozhù, 2003) collate WYG against SBCK as their principal witnesses and frequently follow the SBCK readings against Máo Jìn. Zhāng Yuánjì’s jiàokān jì attached at the end of the SBCK reprint is the first modern collation of this text.

Other points of interest
The SBCK volume is a small-but-canonical example of the Sìbù cóngkān’s editorial practice: reproducing a Sòng-cut original photographically and appending modern collation notes, rather than re-typesetting. It is the textual basis for any serious reading of Huáng’s cí.
