About the work
A three-juan compilation of zàn 讚 (laudatory hymns) and yǒng 詠 (chant-poems) for the Jīnlù zhāi 金籙齋 — the Golden-Register Retreat, the imperial-state Daoist liturgy par excellence — covering the Three Caverns (Sāndòng 三洞 = Dòngzhēn 洞真, Dòngxuán 洞玄, Dòngshén 洞神). Compiled by imperial order under Sòng Huīzōng 宋徽宗 (r. 1100–1125) by Zhāng Shāngyīng 張商英 (1043–1121), the senior official, lay-Buddhist devotee, and ritualist who served as Grand Councillor in 1110–1111. Preserved in the Zhèngtǒng Dàozàng 正統道藏 (DZ 0310 / CT 310 = TC 310), 洞真部 讚頌類. The collection includes hymns by the Sòng emperors Tàizōng 太宗 (r. 976–997), Zhēnzōng 真宗 (r. 997–1022), and Huīzōng. Within the work the imperially-authored hymns are arranged by ritual section (the jiāntán 監壇 supervision of the altar; the qǐbái 啟白 invocation; the various lú zàn 爐讚 incense-burner laudations; and so forth).
Prefaces
No preface in the source. The text opens directly with the first ritual unit, Sōng jīng 誦經 (“Recitation of the Scriptures”): “Above the Three Realms, the fànqì spreads boundless; pervasive of the highest above. Within Heaven of Heavens, the Yùluó xiāotái, the Yùshān shàngjīng…” — the canonical Three-Realms invocation of the Yuánshǐ tiānzūn, opening into the three-juan sequence of imperial and ministerial hymns.
Abstract
John Lagerwey, in Schipper & Verellen eds., The Taoist Canon (2004) 2:1040 (§3.B.3, Língbǎo Liturgy), establishes that the collection was compiled by imperial order while Zhāng Shāngyīng 張商英 served as minister under Huīzōng (r. 1100–1125), perhaps in conjunction with the publication of the great Língbǎo ritual of the Golden Register (the Jīnlù Língbǎo dàochǎng yífàn 金籙靈寶道場儀範) in 1108 — see Sòngshǐ 宋史 20.380. The collection includes hymns by Sòng Tàizōng 宋太宗 (r. 976–997), Zhēnzōng 真宗 (r. 997–1022), and Huīzōng 徽宗. It is probable that Zhāng did no more than add the hymns of his imperial patron Huīzōng, since a collection of the hymns of Tàizōng and Zhēnzōng in two juan already existed (recorded in Yúhǎi 玉海 = VDL 91). The hymns of Huīzōng are also preserved in [[KR5a0607|DZ 607 Yùyīn fǎshì 玉音法事]] 3.16b–23b. The frontmatter accordingly brackets composition to Huīzōng’s reign (1100–1125), most plausibly to ca. 1108–1110 when Zhāng’s ministerial influence was at its greatest. Zhāng’s lifedates 1043–1121 are confirmed in the local CBDB record (c_personid 272).
