Orthodox Purport of the Mystery Lineage

A two-juàn Qīng planchette compendium on the orthodox doctrine of the Xuán zōng 玄宗 (“Mystery Lineage” — the Quánzhēn / Lóngmén self-designation) elaborated through a sequence of revealed sermons by Daoist immortals. The chief revealer is named in the preface as 浮邱仙祖 (Fúqiū xiānzǔ — “Patriarch Fúqiū”, a planchette persona), who delivers the Xuánzōng zhèngzhǐ at Lǚzǔ’s request.
Prefaces
Preface (Lǚ Dòngbīn, as Fúyòu dìjūn). “From the Nine-Heavens the luánhè descend the heavy heaven; jade-pipes first sounded, drawing on the phoenix-pipes; flakes of jade-snow drift and fill the path; yáng opens to the Tài-prosperity, earth-and-Heaven crossed; my heart of crossing-and-saving deepens with the day. Yet — what I deeply lament — is that worldly men have lost their original genuineness and find it hard to return to the path of awakening. Many enter my gate, but most are diligent at the start and slack at the end, abandoning the way half-through; one or two with deep faith do not gain the great wisdom and end by falling to the lesser vehicle. Therefore I have invited Fúqiū xiānzǔ to extend boundless compassion and open boundless skilful means, expounding the orthodox purport of the Mystery-Lineage and rendering its hidden meaning luminous as the supreme treasure-instruction of the first altar — so that those who hear may add their countless rafts and bridges, and through the meng-yīn (dream-cause) broaden each one’s awakening-and-attestation… Fúyòu dìjūn xù.”
Title-poem (Liǔ Shǒu-yuán). “Xuán-zōng is the supreme way of the heavenly immortals — what the ancient sages transmitted from one to another is just this one method. I have stilled my heart and quietly verified its depth-and-subtlety, and feel it to be in fact close to Chán-zōng — not what those vulgar learners can speak of, who, fixed on the four-elements, harangue about the elixir-work. The Śūraṅgama’s Ten Kinds of Immortal-Trains are not the orthodox purport of the Daoist gate; what it calls miào-míng jué-xìng yuán-mǎn pú-tí is just the Daoist gate’s first-layer formula. Now my Imperial Master [Lǚ-zǔ], lamenting the loss-of-transmission of mystery-learning, has specially invited the lofty-perfected and superior-sages jointly to expound the orthodox purport, and the disciples of his gate have further drawn together saintly sayings to mutually clarify… Hóng-jiào dì-zǐ Liǔ Shǒu-yuán xūn mù tí cí.”
Abstract
A Quánzhēn / Lóngmén planchette compendium on inner-alchemical orthodoxy, edited by Liǔ Shǒuyuán (cf. 柳守元) within the same early-eighteenth-century DZJY-source milieu that produced the Bā dòng commentaries on KR5i0005, KR5i0008, KR5i0010, KR5i0017 etc. The compendium’s distinctive feature is its explicit programmatic alignment with Chán-Buddhist meditation theory (Liǔ’s title-poem: “the Mystery-Lineage’s orthodox purport is in fact close to Chánzōng”), positioning the Quánzhēn tradition as the Daoist counterpart to Chán. This is the high-water mark of the Qīng Quánzhēn → Chán rapprochement.
