Móhē zhǐguān guànyì kē 摩訶止觀貫義科
Section-Threading-Meaning Analysis of Mahā-Cessation-and-Contemplation by 受登 (Shòudēng / Tiānxī Jǐngchún, 說); editorial supplementation by 靈耀 (Língyào, 補定)
About the work
A two-juan (上 / 下) early-Qīng sectional analysis (kē 科) of the Móhē zhǐguān (KR6d0130, T1911) by 受登 Tiānxī Shòudēng (b. 1607), with editorial supplementation (bǔdìng 補定 — “supplementing-and-fixing”) by 靈耀 Língyào (the early-Qīng Tiāntái master also responsible for KR6d0012 and KR6d0057).
The genre title — guànyì kē 貫義科 (“threading-meaning sectional-analysis”) — distinguishes the work from the standard kēwén 科文 (purely structural analysis): rather than providing only the hierarchical structural-outline diagrams, the guànyì kē threads together the meaning-content of each sectional unit, providing a more discursive analytical apparatus.
Prefaces
The text in the X56n0924 recension carries the standard front matter; the body proceeds with the guànyì sectional analysis.
Abstract
The Guànyì kē is the principal early-Qīng sectional-analysis apparatus on the Móhē zhǐguān, complementing the existing Sòng-period kē productions in the canonical apparatus. Its production by Shòudēng and Língyào in the early-Qīng productive period demonstrates the institutional vitality of the Tiāntái scholastic tradition in the early-Qīng period, alongside the parallel productions of the early-Qīng Tiāntái revival in southern China.
The composition is bracketed within Shòudēng’s productive period after his birth in 1607 and before the standard cutoff of the early-Qīng productive period c. 1700.
