Sìjiào yí jíjiě 四教儀集解

Compiled Interpretations of the Four-Doctrines Manual by 從義 (Cóngyì / Shénzhì, 撰)

About the work

A three-juan Northern-Sòng compiled-interpretations commentary by Cóngyì 從義 (1042–1091) on Dìguān’s Tiāntái sìjiào yí (KR6d0168, T1931). The work is the principal Sòng-period subcommentary on the standard Tiāntái introductory manual, and through its transmission the standard medieval pedagogical apparatus for the Sìjiào yí.

Abstract

Cóngyì’s Jíjiě draws together the various interpretations of Dìguān’s Sìjiào yí current in the mid-Northern-Sòng shānjiā tradition, providing systematic commentary on each section of the manual. The work belongs together with Cóngyì’s other major Sòng productions (KR6d0063, KR6d0139, KR6d0140) as the principal mid-Northern-Sòng shānjiā scholastic apparatus.

The composition is bracketed within Cóngyì’s productive period c. 1062–1091.
