Huáyán jīng tūn hǎi jí 華嚴經吞海集
The “Devouring-the-Ocean” Compilation on the Huáyán Scripture by 道通 (Dàotōng, 述)
About the work
The Huáyán jīng tūn hǎi jí in 3 fascicles is the poetic-doctrinal compilation (jí 集) by 道通 Dàotōng on the Avataṃsaka. The title’s metaphor — tūn hǎi 吞海 (“devouring the ocean,” from the classical phrase jīngyú tūnhǎi 鯨魚吞海, “the whale devouring the ocean”) — figures the bodhisattva’s all-encompassing reception of the Avataṃsaka’s vast doctrine.

Abstract
The bracket adopted here (1100 – 1280) reflects the broad Southern-Sòng period of compilation. The work draws on the entire Sòng commentarial tradition on the Avataṃsaka, providing a synthetic devotional-doctrinal anthology. The work is preserved in the Manji Xù zàng jīng (X239) collection.
