This 2-fascicle commentary on Dà bān niè pán jīng 大般涅槃經 (KR6g0001) is by 灌頂 Guàndǐng (561–632), the principal disciple of 智顗 Zhìyǐ and the second patriarch of the Tiāntái school. The xuán yì “profound meaning” format provides a doctrinal preamble to the larger sūtra, in the standard Tiāntái scholastic genre.
Abstract
The bracket adopted here (597–632) reflects Guàndǐng’s mature Tiāntái scholarly activity, beginning with Zhìyǐ’s death.
