Léngqié jīng jízhù 楞伽經集註
Collected Annotations on the Sūtra of Laṅkā compiled by 正受 (Zhèngshòu, 集記)
About the work
X324 in four fascicles is 正受’s Southern-Sòng jízhù 集註 (“collected annotations”) on [[KR6i0327|Léngqiéābáduōluó bǎo jīng 楞伽阿跋多羅寶經]] (T670). The genre is anthological: rather than offering original commentary, the work assembles glosses from earlier Laṅkāvatāra commentators — 寶臣’s T1791 is heavily drawn upon — into a single working text, with 正受’s own editorial frame supplying continuity and a Chán reading-lens.
Prefaces
The Taishō witness preserves at the head a preface by Shěn Yíng 沈瀛 (sobriquet Zhúzhāi 竹齋), Cháoyìdàfū and Xīn Huáidōng ānfǔsī cānyìguān 新淮東安撫司參議官. Shěn Yíng (DILA records him as a layman) frames the Laṅkāvatāra as a sūtra spoken by the Buddha for those of intermediate capacity (中根), in contrast to the Śūraṅgama and Yuánjué spoken for those of the highest (上根). The preface gives no precise date, but Shěn Yíng’s career places it in the late twelfth or very early thirteenth century — consistent with 正受’s productive period.
Abstract
正受 (sobriquet Léiān 雷庵), Línjì-school dharma-heir of Zhuóān Déguāng 拙庵德光 (1121–1203), is best known as the compiler of the [[KR6q0010|Jiātài pǔdēng lù 嘉泰普燈錄]] (the fifth of the great Sòng Chán lamp histories, completed 1204). The Léngqié jízhù is his single major scholastic-commentarial production. As a Chán-school jízhù on a sūtra that the Chán tradition claims for itself (since Bodhidharma’s transmission of T670 to Huìkě), the work represents the Sòng Chán reading of T670 qua sūtra rather than qua lineage-credential. Date bracket follows 正受’s mature productive period (post-1180, pre-Pǔdēnglù compilation 1204).
X324 was an influential late-Sòng / early-Yuán reference work and was the principal Chán-side complement to 寶臣’s T1791 in the medieval Chinese commentarial transmission of the Laṅkāvatāra.
