About the work
T1791 in ten fascicles is the Sòng-period commentary on 實叉難陀’s [[KR6i0329|Dàshèng rù léngqié jīng]] (T672) — by far the most substantial classical commentary on the Tang Laṅkāvatāra and the principal medium through which the seven-fascicle version was studied in the Sòng. The genre is zhù 注 (running annotation): the parent sūtra is reproduced in full, with 寶臣’s commentary inserted at each lemma.
Abstract
The author 寶臣 (DILA Authority A001919) is identified in the colophon as a monk of the eastern capital (東都僧) — i.e. Kāifēng under the Northern Sòng. His biographical record is otherwise essentially empty; 寶臣 is known almost solely for T1791. Date bracket follows the conservative Northern-Sòng eastern-capital window (the Sòng moved capitals to Lín’ān after 1127); within that, the doctrinal vocabulary of the commentary is consistent with a date in the eleventh century. T1791 became the most commonly used Sòng commentary on T672 in the Yuán and Míng periods, and was the basis of the late-Míng commentaries by 德清 (X326, X327), 智旭 (X328, X329), 通潤 (X331), and others.
