About the work
A three-fascicle ritual compendium (yíguǐ 儀軌, Skt. vidhi) that systematises the Garbhadhātu mandala ritual practice from the Mahāvairocana-sūtra (KR6j0001, T18n0848) into a complete liturgical sequence. Translated at Chángān by Śubhakarasiṃha 輸婆迦羅 (善無畏, 637–735) under imperial commission; transcribed (bǐshòu 筆授) by Yīxíng 一行 (一行, 683–727) and orally rendered into Chinese (yìyǔ 譯語) by Bǎoyuè 寶月. The Taishō text reproduces a 1711 (Shōtoku 1) Japanese woodblock edition prefaced by Eikō 慧光 of the Tō-ji Esoteric tradition. The colophon attributes the work to the imperial-Chángān Dà Xīngshànsì 大興善寺.
Prefaces
The Taishō text preserves a Japanese Shōtoku 1 (1711) preface by the Tō-ji monk Eikō 慧光 of the Língyún jīngshè 靈雲精舍 (Reiun-shōja) at Bushū 武城 (Edo). Eikō’s preface explains the woodblock-printing rationale: his master had imported through Kūkai (弘法大師) several hundred Esoteric scrolls forming the doctrinal-ritual foundation of the Tō-ji “single-house” lineage, and had wished to print them; the Bóshān 檗山 (Manpuku-ji 萬福寺 / Ōbaku) Tripiṭaka edition had supplied nine-tenths of the Esoteric corpus. This three-fascicle ritual is one of the texts the master had not lived to print; Eikō completed the project. The translator-colophon at the start of the text proper reads: 京大興善寺中天竺國三藏輸婆迦羅奉詔譯授法弟子一行筆授比丘寶月譯語 — “By imperial decree, the Tripiṭaka-master Śubhakarasiṃha of Central India, of the Chángān Dà Xīngshànsì, translated and conferred [the text]; his disciple Yīxíng transcribed; the bhikṣu Bǎoyuè rendered the language.”
Abstract
The text — sometimes called the Niànsòng yíguǐ 念誦儀軌 (“Recitation Ritual Manual”) for short — is the principal Tang Esoteric ritual codification of the Garbhadhātu mandala practice, supplementary to and independent of the seventh fascicle of the Mahāvairocana-sūtra itself. Its three fascicles cover: (i) the preparatory rites (pūrva-sevā), the construction of the practice space, the consecration of implements, and the Three Mysteries (三密) introductory yoga; (ii) the central sādhana — the construction of the Garbhadhātu mandala in visualisation, the invitation of the central deity Mahāvairocana with his fivefold retinue (the four Buddhas of the four directions: Ratnaketu/Saṃkusumitarāja/Amitāyus/Divyadundubhi; the four Bodhisattvas: Samantabhadra/Mañjuśrī/Avalokiteśvara/Maitreya; and the Acalanātha and Trailokyavijaya protective deities), the abhiṣeka offerings, and the japa of the mūla-mantra and ancillary mantras; (iii) the post-sādhana offerings (homa, food, garlands), the merit-dedication (pariṇāmanā), and the dismissal of the deities. The framework establishes the canonical Garbhadhātu ritual sequence that becomes standard in subsequent East Asian Esoteric practice — both the Tang Tángmì 唐密 transmission and the Japanese Shingon Tōmitsu 東密 and Tendai Taimitsu 台密 traditions follow this codification.
The translation is conventionally dated to the period of Śubhakarasiṃha’s active translation work in Chángān (716–735), most plausibly the period 724–735 after he had completed the Mahāvairocana-sūtra itself with Yīxíng. Yīxíng’s role as transcriber confirms a date no later than 727 (his death year), placing the most likely translation date in 724–727. The bracket 724–735 in the frontmatter accommodates both possibilities.
The presence in the Sòng/Yuán/Míng/Gōng editions, alongside the Korean Tripiṭaka witness, confirms this text’s continuous transmission as a canonical Esoteric scripture.
