Compendium of Greater Accomplishment Ritual Procedures for the Lotus-Womb-Treasury Compassion-Born Mandala from the Mahāvairocanasūtra (anonymous variant recension)

About the work

A two-fascicle Garbhadhātu ritual codification, anonymously transmitted, printed in the Taishō under T18n0852b immediately after Fǎquán’s Xuánfǎsì yíguǐ (KR6j0008, T852a). The two texts share a near-identical title (with the variant Chinese transliteration Pílúshènà 毘盧舍那 in T852b vs. Pílúzhēnà 毘盧遮那 in T852a — both rendering the Sanskrit Vairocana) and overlapping ritual content. T852b is conventionally treated as a parallel or alternate recension of the same Garbhadhātu ritual tradition.

Prefaces

The text opens directly with the title and the chapter header “供養方便會第一” (Compendium on the Means of Offering, Chapter 1); no translator-attribution colophon survives. The opening verse is identical in form to that of T849 (KR6j0005) and T850 (KR6j0006), confirming the cognate ritual tradition.

Abstract

The relationship between T852a (KR6j0008, Fǎquán’s Xuánfǎsì yíguǐ) and T852b (this text) is contested. The Taishō editors print them as parallel texts under the same number with different sub-letters, suggesting they regarded T852b as a variant recension of T852a but with sufficient independent textual identity to merit separate inclusion. Possibilities considered in modern scholarship (Ono Genmyō, Hodge, Orzech) include: (i) T852b as an earlier draft or alternative arrangement of Fǎquán’s ritual codification; (ii) T852b as an independent post-Fǎquán Chángān or Tendai-Esoteric Japanese reworking; (iii) T852b as the Tōmitsu (Shingon) recension distinct from the Taimitsu (Tendai) recension preserved as T852a. The dating bracket here (824–859, late Tang) reflects the most likely period of redaction in light of the textual relations.

The text comes with the same ritual content as T852a — preparatory rites, central Garbhadhātu sādhana, abhiṣeka offerings, and merit-dedication — but with somewhat different mantra-mudrā arrangements and visualisation prescriptions in the central sādhana.

Translations and research

No substantial secondary literature located. (T852b is briefly discussed in the apparatus to Hodge 2003 and in the Tang Esoteric chapters of Orzech, Sørensen, and Payne 2011 as a parallel to T852a.)
