Abstract
Yǒng Hǎi’s commentary, like its companion by Xìng Qí, reflects the late-Míng Vinaya revival’s interest in casuistic disciplinary literature. Where Xìng Qí’s lüèjiě tends to abridge, Yǒng Hǎi’s jīngshì tends to expand and contextualise the Buddha’s adjudications, providing more discussion of doctrinal background and historical precedent. The two are typically read together.
