About the work

A two-fascicle commentary on the Fànwǎng bodhisattva-precepts by the Silla-dynasty Korean Buddhist scholar Ŭijŏk 義寂 (義寂). One of the three principal Korean Silla commentaries on the Fànwǎng jīng, alongside 元曉 Wǒnhyo’s Fànwǎngjīng púsàjièběn sījì (KR6k0090) and 太賢 Tàixián’s Fànwǎngjīng gǔjì jì (KR6k0083).

Abstract

Ŭijŏk’s commentary represents the Silla-dynasty Yogācāra-Cí’ēn 慈恩 reading of the bodhisattva-precepts. Working in the Tang Yogācāra tradition of 玄奘 Xuánzàng and 窺基 Kuījī, Ŭijŏk reads the Fànwǎng precepts within the Yogācāra framework of consciousness-only and the bodhisattva-bhūmi progression. The text is one of the principal documents of the Korean Buddhist exegetical tradition’s deep engagement with Chinese Buddhist scholarship and is included in the Taishō canon as a representative of the East Asian Buddhist commentary tradition on the bodhisattva-precepts.
