Fànwǎngjīng gǔjì jì 梵網經古迹記
Records of the Old Traces on the Brahmajāla Sūtra by 太賢 (Tàixián / Taehyŏn, 集)
About the work
A two-fascicle Silla-dynasty commentary on the Fànwǎng jīng by Taehyŏn 太賢 (太賢) — the major Silla Yogācāra scholar of the 8th century. 古迹 “old traces” indicates that the commentary preserves earlier exegetical traditions; the genre is a compendium that gathers and synthesises prior commentaries.
Prefaces
Author’s colophon: 新羅國青丘沙門太賢集.
Abstract
Taehyŏn’s Fànwǎngjīng gǔjì jì is one of the three principal Silla commentaries on the Fànwǎng jīng, alongside 義寂 Ŭijŏk’s Púsàjièběn shū (KR6k0082) and 元曉 Wǒnhyo’s Fànwǎngjīng púsàjièběn sījì (KR6k0090). The text presents a synthetic Yogācāra-Cí’ēn 慈恩 reading drawing on Tang scholarship while preserving distinctly Korean exegetical traditions. Like Ŭijŏk’s commentary, it is included in the Taishō canon as representative East Asian commentary literature.
