Fànwǎng púsàjièjīng yìshū 梵網菩薩戒經義疏

Commentary on the Brahmajāla Bodhisattva Precept Sūtra by 灌頂 (Guàndǐng, 記)

About the work

A two-fascicle Sui-dynasty commentary on the Fànwǎng jīng by Guàndǐng 灌頂 (灌頂, 561–632), the principal disciple-redactor of Zhìyǐ 智顗 (智顗). The relationship to KR6k0078 (which is also attributed to Guàndǐng’s redaction of Zhìyǐ’s teaching) reflects the complex transmission of Tiāntái commentary literature: this independent work appears to be Guàndǐng’s own commentary as distinct from his recording of Zhìyǐ’s teaching.

Prefaces

Compiler’s colophon: 隋天台沙門灌頂記.

Abstract

Guàndǐng’s independent commentary represents the second-generation Tiāntái scholastic treatment of the Fànwǎng tradition, building on Zhìyǐ’s foundational teaching but extending the doctrinal exposition into more systematic scholastic form. Together with KR6k0078, it is one of the foundational Tiāntái texts on the bodhisattva-precepts.
