The Bodhisattva Precept-Text (Yogācāra recension, Dharmakṣema) by 慈氏菩薩 (Maitreya, 說) and 曇無讖 (Dharmakṣema, 譯)
About the work
A one-fascicle bodhisattva-precept text from the Yogācārabhūmi tradition, attributed to Maitreya 慈氏菩薩 (慈氏菩薩) and translated by Dharmakṣema 曇無讖 (曇無讖) at Gūzāng of the Northern Liáng 北涼 in 414–421 CE.
Prefaces
Translator’s colophon: 北涼中天竺三藏曇無讖譯.
Abstract
The text is Dharmakṣema’s translation of the bodhisattva-precept section of the Yogācārabhūmi (specifically the Bodhisattva-bhūmi) — predating Xuánzàng’s translation KR6k0123 by some 200 years. The two texts present essentially the same Indian source-material in alternative renderings: Dharmakṣema’s an early-medieval translation in the Liáng-Kashmir transmission, Xuánzàng’s a Tang philological refinement. The Yogācāra recension of the bodhisattva-precepts presents a systematic threefold schema — the saṃvara, kuśala-dharma-saṃgrāhaka, and sattvārtha-kriyā aggregates — that became canonical in East Asian Mahāyāna alongside the Fànwǎng schema.
