Púsàjièběn 菩薩戒本

The Bodhisattva Precept-Text (Yogācāra recension, Xuánzàng) by 彌勒菩薩 (Maitreya, 說) and 玄奘 (Xuánzàng, 譯)

About the work

A one-fascicle bodhisattva-precept text translated by Xuánzàng 玄奘 (玄奘) at Chángān 645–664 CE. Xuánzàng’s revised translation of the same Yogācārabhūmi material rendered by Dharmakṣema as KR6k0122; together with KR6k0121 (jiémówén), this constitutes Xuánzàng’s complete Yogācāra bodhisattva-precept apparatus.

Prefaces

Translator’s colophon: 大唐三藏法師玄奘奉詔譯.

Abstract

Xuánzàng’s translation supersedes Dharmakṣema’s KR6k0122 in philological precision, reflecting Xuánzàng’s distinctive translation programme of replacing earlier Chinese renderings with Sanskrit-based revisions. The text became the standard Yogācāra-Cí’ēn reference for the bodhisattva-precepts in Tang and post-Tang East Asian Mahāyāna scholasticism. Its threefold sānjù jìngjiè schema is the doctrinal framework underlying all Yogācāra-derived discussions of bodhisattva-discipline.
