Sìfēnlǜ xíngshì chāo pī 四分律行事鈔批
Sub-commentary on the Sìfēnlǜ Compendium of Practical Affairs by 大覺 (Dàjué, 撰)
About the work
A fourteen-fascicle Tang sub-commentary on Dàoxuān’s (道宣) Sìfēnlǜ shānfán bǔquē xíngshì chāo 四分律刪繁補闕行事鈔 (KR6k0017) by Dàjué 大覺 (大覺) of Huáyánsì 華嚴寺 in Hángzhōu. The pī 批 genre name (literally “criticism, comment”) here means a thorough lemmatic gloss on the parent text; in the Sòng catalogues the work is sometimes counted as one of the liùshí jiā 六十家 (“sixty houses”) of Tang Xíngshì chāo commentaries.
Prefaces
The Manji edition opens with a mùcì 目次 organised in liùmén fēnbié 六門分別 (“differentiation under six heads”) — Dàjué’s introductory schema — followed by shímén yì 十門義 (“the meaning of the ten gates”) and the body of the chāo lemmata.
Abstract
The Xíngshì chāo pī is one of the substantial Tang Nánshān sub-commentaries that survived the post-Huìchāng (845) Vinaya-school disruption. Dàjué worked in the late-seventh / early-eighth century at Hángzhōu’s Huáyánsì; his jì / pī tradition of reading Dàoxuān is therefore documentarily critical for the southern reception of Nánshānlǜ between Dàoxuān’s death (667) and Yǔn Kān’s eleventh-century revival (允堪). The work is structured around the standard Xíngshì chāo division into biāozōng xiǎndé piān 標宗顯德篇 etc.; each lemma is treated under the conventional gēnběn 根本 / shìxiāng 事相 / shìyì 釋義 procedure of Tang Vinaya commentary. Specific dating is not preserved; the bracket here gives Dàjué’s likely active period.
